Root Canals

Because root canals have received such a bad reputation over the years, hearing the news that you need a root canal may feel overwhelming and scary.

Most people associate root canals with pain; however, it’s important to understand that it’s not the root canal that’s causing your pain, but rather the infection or damage to your tooth. Root canal therapy will actually relieve your pain and could possible save your tooth from extraction.

Dr. Patel and Dr. Girgis understand that this can be a stressful time, and they are kind and gentle when providing care. They will use their expertise to help guide you through root canal therapy with ease. We can even offer nitrous oxide to help take the edge off for our patients who are feeling anxiety about their procedure.

Here’s what you need to know about root canals.

What Is a Root Canal?

When your tooth sustains an injury, infection, or fracture, it may become infected. If this happens, our dentists will clean out the affected root through a small hole we create in the top of your tooth. Once your canal is clean and clear of infection, we’ll seal your tooth with a temporary filling. You may also be prescribed an antibiotic to fight infection.

Unfortunately, after root canal therapy your tooth is not as strong as it once was, and we’ll need to restore it with either a permanent filling or porcelain crown. Dr. Patel and Dr. Girgis will let you know which options are best for your needs.

When Do I Need Root Canal Therapy?

A tooth that has been fractured, chipped, or damaged to the point where bacteria can reach the root may experience an infection. This often begins with sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweet foods and beverages. It can quickly become a dull, achy, and constant toothache.

It’s important to note that this pain will not go away on its own, so please don’t wait to contact our office. In fact, it will only become more painful and put you at a greater risk for infection, which will spread to other critical parts of the body.

At Modern Day Smiles, we understand how painful dental infections can be and how critical it is to see you as soon as possible. For this reason, we make every effort to accommodate our emergency patients at one of our two convenient locations. Whether you have an injury or you’re experiencing dental pain, please contact us immediately to schedule a same-day appointment.

Remember, the quicker we can diagnose your condition, the quicker we can treat you and get you back on the path to wellness. It could mean the difference between saving and losing your tooth.
